Marshfield Police Press Release July 5, 2022

Incident: Two recreational boaters ejected from a 24 foot center console

Location: Farnham Rock buoy #6 (located approx. ¾ a mile from Brant Rock)

At approximately 10am this morning the Marshfield Harbormaster’s office received a call from the Captain of the Fishing Vessel Finest Kind; Captain Dana Blackman. The F/V Finest Kind is homeported in Green Harbor, Ma.

The Captain reported seeing a 24 foot Center Console vessel circling at a high rate of speed In the vicinity of the Farnham Rock buoy #6, this federal aid to navigation is located approx. ¾ of a mile from Brant Rock. The captain also reported that they just pulled two males from the water after seeing the vessel in a circling pattern. One of the males was observed waving a white T-shirt while in the water.

The two males were somehow ejected from the vessel and not wearing life jackets, nor tethered to a vessel kill switch, luckily the two males were not injured. The vessel remained in a tight circle pattern, known as the “Circle of Death”. The vessel was on a westerly track in a tight high speed circular pattern tracking towards Green Harbor & Brant Rock. This prompted a temporary beach closure and a one-mile security zone provided by Marshfield Police; in case the vessel’s direction rapidly changed. After 90 minutes Sea Tow was able to foul the prop using a nylon tow line.

This is a stark reminder of how fast incidents can occur on the water without notice. We commend the Captain and crew of the F/V Finest Kind for their bravery, due diligence and keen situational awareness of locating two persons in the water. We also want to thank Sea Tow and other civilians for their assistance with this incident. We urge the use of life jackets and tethering of the vessel safety kill switch. These incidents can happen to the most experienced mariners.
